Disclosure: I build Focus Flow. Pogether details come from pogether.com and StudyBuddy details from studybuddyrooms.com, both checked on 23 October 2026. Apps change quickly, so check their sites too.
The Short Answer
All three let friends study together without a camera. Pogether is a phone app (iOS and Android) with a shared Pomodoro timer at a virtual desk, open desks and clubs for meeting new people, and chat during breaks. StudyBuddy runs in the browser with no account: each person runs their own timer, and the room has optional chat and a shared task list. Focus Flow Rooms run in the browser with one shared Pomodoro timer controlled by the host, and room chat that the server locks during focus blocks. Focus Flow Rooms need a free account.

Pogether
Pogether calls itself a social productivity app: you sit at a virtual desk with friends and share a Pomodoro cycle, such as 25 minutes of focus and 5 of break, with customizable intervals. You see who is focusing and who is on break, with an avatar instead of a camera. Its own pages say focus blocks are silent and chat opens during breaks. Clubs, streaks, leaderboards and room decoration add a game layer, and open desks let you study with strangers. It is available on iOS and Android in 13 languages. The core is free, with an optional Pro subscription.
Pick Pogether if you mostly study from your phone, like streaks and leaderboards, or want to meet new study partners as well as friends.
StudyBuddy
StudyBuddy (studybuddyrooms.com) is a browser study room you can open as a guest. Share a 6-character code and up to 10 people can join. Each person runs their own stopwatch or Pomodoro on their own card, so starting yours does not start anyone else's. The room has a shared task list, optional chat, themes and ambient sound, and a Focus Mode that hides chat and tasks. Stats, streaks and weekly rankings need an account. Guest rooms close after about 6 hours of inactivity.
Pick StudyBuddy if you want to start right now with no sign-up, or your group works at different rhythms.
Focus Flow Rooms
Focus Rooms are part of Focus Flow, a free study web app. The host creates a room with a schedule (Classic 25/5, Deep Work 50/10, Sprint 15/3 or custom) and shares a private invite link or room code. Everyone works on the same clock. Room chat is locked while a focus block runs and opens on breaks and before the host starts the timer. The server checks the room's schedule for every message, so a modified app cannot get around it. Messages are up to 280 characters, limited to 10 per minute in a room, and kept for about 24 hours.
Limits: every member needs a free account with a verified email, rooms hold 2 to 8 people, only the host controls the timer, and the schedule is fixed once the room is created. There are no open rooms for meeting strangers.
Pick Focus Flow Rooms if chat keeps derailing your group, you want everyone on one clock, and you want your flashcards, exam dates and assignments in the same app.
